Este Mexicano es conocido como el Schindler de la Guerra Civil Española porque refugió en su domicilio (de 100 m cuadrados) particular en Málaga a más de quinientas personas de ambos bandos durante la Guerra.

Tras la guerra pidió y obtuvo la nacionalidad española, y las autoridades franquistas quisieron juzgarlo por haber pertenecido a la masonería. El respaldo de México a la República había convertido a Smerdou en una persona respetada entre la izquierda, lo que facilitó su labor humanitaria.

Murió a los 97 años y donó su cuerpo a la ciencia.


This Mexican is known as the Schindler of the Spanish Civil War because as he gave refuge in his home (100 square meters) in Malaga to more than five hundred people from both sides during the war.

After the war, he obtained the Spanish nationality and the pro-Franco authorities wanted to judge him for having belonged to masonry. Mexico’s support for the Republic had made that Smerdou was respected person among the left, which facilitated his humanitarian work.

When he died at the age 97 donated his body to science.
