Perteneció a una de la Brigadas Internacionales (Brigada Lincoln) que defendieron la República Española en la Guerra Civil, luchando contra el fascismo.

Huyó de su hogar siendo un adolescente en busca de un futuro mejor. Viajó como polizón en trenes de mercancías hasta llegar a Chicago, donde aunque encuentra trabajo por un tiempo, sufre de pobreza y un feroz racismo. Es durante esa época cuando toma conciencia social y decide alistarse como voluntario para combatir en España por la libertad y justicia social. El dijo: «En España fue la primera vez en mi vida que me sentí libre». Al final de la guerra vuelve a Estados Unidos y sufre, como muchos otros, una persecución por el FBI ya que eran vistos como peligrosos comunistas. Al tener problemas con encontrar trabajo montó su propia tienda donde arreglaba televisores en Nueva York. Nunca dejó la lucha social: daba charlas sobre la Brigada Lincoln, defendía los derechos civiles y escribió sus memorias.

He belonged to one of the International Brigades (Lincoln Brigade) that defended the Spanish Republic in the Civil War, fighting against fascism.

He fled his home as a teenager in search of a better future. He traveled as a stowaway on freight trains until arriving in Chicago, where he finds work for a time, suffers from poverty and ferocious racism. In this period of time, he became socially aware and decided to be a volunteer to fight in Spain for freedom and social justice. He said: «In Spain it was the first time in my life that I felt free.» At the end of the war, he returned to the United States and suffered, like many others, persecution by the FBI, which were already seen as dangerous communists. He had problems with finding a job and he founded his own store fixing televisions in New York. He never left the social struggle: he gave talks about the Lincoln Brigade, as a defender of civil rights he wrote his memoirs.
